Chicago Pneumatic was established to manufacture pneumatic tools and compressed-air equipment for industrial and construction applications. Early products included pneumatic hammers, rock drills, air compressors, and drilling equipment.
The company expanded rapidly during the early twentieth century and became a major supplier of equipment used in construction, mining, transportation, and heavy industry. Its products were employed in the construction of bridges, tunnels, dams, and other major infrastructure projects around the world.
In 1939, Chicago Pneumatic introduced the world’s first impact wrench, a product that became an industry standard for automotive and industrial fastening applications. During World War II, the company supplied tools and equipment supporting military production efforts.
The company continued expanding its product offerings throughout the twentieth century before being acquired by Atlas Copco in 1987.
