Description
EMC Corporation developed hardware and software solutions for managing, storing, protecting, and analyzing large volumes of data. Its flagship storage platforms, such as Symmetrix (later VMAX) and CLARiiON (later VNX), were widely used in enterprise data centers.
The company also played a major role in virtualization through its majority ownership of VMware and in cybersecurity through RSA Security. EMC’s solutions were central to enterprise IT infrastructure, enabling data availability, disaster recovery, and cloud integration.
History
EMC was founded in 1979 and initially focused on memory boards for mainframe computers. The company later shifted toward enterprise storage systems, becoming a dominant player in the data storage market during the 1990s and 2000s.
It expanded through acquisitions, including VMware (2004) and RSA Security (2006), broadening its portfolio into virtualization and cybersecurity.
In 2016, Dell acquired EMC in a landmark merger valued at approximately $67 billion, one of the largest technology acquisitions in history. Following the acquisition, EMC became part of Dell Technologies, and the EMC brand was gradually integrated into Dell EMC.
