Howard W. Sams and Co. was founded in 1946 by Howard W. Sams in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company quickly became a key provider of standardized service data during the rapid growth of consumer electronics.

In 1967, the company was acquired by ITT. In 1987, ITT sold its publishing division to Macmillan. In 1991, Macmillan Computer Publishing was sold to Paramount Communications, the parent company of Simon & Schuster. Through these transitions, the Sams Photofact line remained widely used.
