Description
Originally established to support Howard Hughes’ aviation projects, Hughes Aircraft gained early recognition through development of the Hughes H-1 Racer and later the H-4 Hercules (“Spruce Goose”). During World War II, the company produced aircraft prototypes and aircraft components, but its greatest success came after the war through military electronics and missile development.
Under the leadership of scientists Simon Ramo and Dean Wooldridge, Hughes became a leader in radar, fire-control systems, guided missiles, and aerospace electronics. The company developed the AIM-4 Falcon missile, advanced radar systems, communications satellites, and numerous spacecraft used by NASA and commercial operators. Hughes Research Laboratories also produced the world’s first working laser in 1960.
By the 1980s, Hughes Aircraft employed tens of thousands of workers and was among the largest defense contractors in the United States. Its technologies supported military aircraft, missile defense systems, communications networks, and space exploration programs.
