History
The operational roots of NCR Voyix date to 1884, when John Henry Patterson acquired James Ritty’s cash register patents in Dayton, Ohio, to incorporate the National Cash Register Company. Over the next century, NCR transformed retail accounting by manufacturing mechanical and electric cash registers, early stored-program business computers, barcode scanners, and automated checkout terminals.
Following a multi-billion-dollar acquisition by AT&T in 1991—during which it operated as AT&T Global Information Solutions—NCR was spun off again as an independent public company in 1996. The company subsequently shifted its strategic focus toward automated self-service checkouts, electronic banking networks, and enterprise hospitality software, anchored by its 2011 acquisition of Radiant Systems (the developer of Aloha POS). In 2018, NCR relocated its global headquarters from Dayton to Midtown Atlanta, Georgia.
In late 2022, NCR announced a comprehensive separation plan to split its digital software operations from its capital-intensive ATM hardware and cash-servicing division. On October 16–17, 2023, the tax-free partition was officially executed: the self-service banking and ATM networks were established as an independent company named NCR Atleos Corporation, while the digital commerce, retail POS, and restaurant platform business was rebranded as NCR Voyix Corporation, trading under the NYSE ticker symbol VYX.
