Description
Jack Northrop established the company in Hawthorne, California, to pursue advanced aircraft concepts that often challenged conventional aviation design. During World War II, Northrop produced aircraft such as the P-61 Black Widow night fighter. In the postwar years, the company developed aircraft including the F-89 Scorpion, F-5 Freedom Fighter, T-38 Talon, and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Northrop became particularly associated with flying wing research, an area that influenced the design of the B-2 Spirit decades later.
The company expanded into missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, electronics, and space-related technologies. By the 1980s and early 1990s, Northrop was one of the largest defense contractors in the United States. In 1994, it acquired Grumman Aerospace Corporation, creating Northrop Grumman Corporation.
