Tung-Sol

Overview

Tung-Sol was an American manufacturer of vacuum tubes, automotive lamps, and electronic components active throughout much of the 20th century. The company became especially well known for producing high-quality radio, television, industrial, military, and audio vacuum tubes during the peak years of tube electronics manufacturing.

The company originated from tungsten-filament lamp manufacturing, which inspired the “Tung-Sol” name, derived from “Tungsten” and “Solution.” Over time, Tung-Sol expanded into vacuum tube production and became one of the major American tube manufacturers alongside RCA, Sylvania, GE, and CBS-Hytron.

Tung-Sol manufactured receiving tubes, transmitting tubes, rectifiers, compactrons, industrial tubes, and military-specification electronic components. The company produced many well-known audio and communications tube types including the 6550 power tube, which became highly regarded in high-fidelity audio amplifiers and musical instrument amplifiers.

Tung-Sol tubes were widely used in radios, televisions, military communications systems, industrial electronics, and professional audio equipment.
