History

The FT-817 was introduced by Yaesu around 2001 as one of the first widely available all-band, all-mode portable QRP transceivers. It was designed to provide full-featured HF through UHF capability in a compact form factor. The radio gained popularity among amateur radio operators for portable operations such as field days and low-power experimentation.

An updated version, the FT-817ND, was later released with improvements including a higher-capacity battery and minor internal updates, while maintaining the same overall design and functionality.
