Description
Broadcom develops semiconductor components used in networking, wireless communications, storage, and broadband systems. Its chips are commonly found in routers, switches, smartphones, and data center hardware.
In addition to semiconductors, Broadcom has expanded into infrastructure software through major acquisitions. These include CA Technologies (enterprise software), Symantec’s enterprise security business, and VMware. This combination allows Broadcom to offer integrated hardware and software solutions for enterprise and cloud environments.
The company focuses on high-performance, mission-critical technologies and maintains a strategy of acquiring and optimizing established businesses.
History
Broadcom’s roots trace back to Hewlett-Packard’s semiconductor operations in 1961. These operations eventually became part of Avago Technologies, which was formed after a series of spin-offs and private equity ownership.
Avago went public in 2009 and began acquiring major semiconductor and technology companies. In 2016, Avago acquired Broadcom Corporation and adopted the Broadcom Inc. name.
The company continued expanding into software with the acquisitions of CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec’s enterprise security division in 2019. In 2023, Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware, significantly strengthening its position in enterprise infrastructure software.
