Description

Motorola produced a wide range of communication equipment, including land mobile radios, base stations, portable handheld units, and Citizens Band radios. The company’s equipment was widely used in public safety, commercial, industrial, and amateur radio applications. Motorola also manufactured consumer products, including televisions, car radios, and early cellular telephones.

Motorola equipment is commonly associated with durable construction and standardized designs intended for long-term service in demanding environments. The company developed numerous radio technologies that influenced both commercial and government communication systems.

History

Motorola was founded in Chicago, Illinois, as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. The company’s first major success was the production of automobile radios in the early 1930s. The brand name “Motorola” was introduced in 1930 and became the company’s official name in 1947.

During World War II, Motorola supplied radio equipment to the U.S. military, including the SCR-300 backpack radio and the handheld SCR-536 “Handie-Talkie.” These products helped establish Motorola as a leader in portable radio communications.

In the postwar period, Motorola expanded into television manufacturing and semiconductor development. The company became a major supplier of two-way radio systems for police, fire, and commercial services. Motorola also entered the Citizens Band radio market during the 1960s and 1970s.

Motorola was instrumental in the development of cellular technology. In 1973, the company demonstrated the first handheld mobile phone, and in 1983 introduced the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, one of the first commercially available cellular phones.

In 2011, Motorola, Inc. was split into two separate companies:

  • Motorola Solutions, Inc., focusing on communication systems and services
  • Motorola Mobility, focusing on consumer mobile devices

Motorola Solutions continues to manufacture professional and public safety radio systems, while Motorola Mobility operates as a subsidiary of Lenovo.
