Overview
Zenith Electronics LLC is the successor organization to Zenith Radio Corporation, the historic American radio and television manufacturer founded in Chicago in 1918. The company became one of the best-known names in American consumer electronics, particularly in radio and television manufacturing.
Originally established as Chicago Radio Laboratory, the company adopted the Zenith name in 1923 and expanded into radios, television receivers, communications equipment, and related electronics products. Zenith became especially recognized for television technology development, remote control systems, and broadcast engineering innovations.
During the second half of the 20th century, Zenith was one of the last major American-owned television manufacturers. The company developed important high-definition television (HDTV) technologies and held numerous broadcast and television patents.
LG Electronics acquired controlling interest in Zenith in 1995, and by 1999 Zenith became a wholly owned subsidiary operating as Zenith Electronics LLC. Following the acquisition, Zenith continued focusing primarily on television technology development, digital broadcasting systems, and intellectual property licensing.
