Willard F. Rockwell Sr. built Rockwell Manufacturing Company into a major supplier of heavy-duty truck components and industrial equipment during the growth of the American automotive and transportation industries.
The company became especially well known for axle assemblies and drivetrain products used in trucks and industrial vehicles. Through expansion and acquisitions, Rockwell Manufacturing broadened into additional industrial and mechanical product lines.
In 1958, Rockwell Manufacturing Company merged with Standard Steel Spring Company to form Rockwell-Standard Corporation. This merger significantly expanded the company’s industrial and manufacturing operations.
During the 1960s, Rockwell-Standard diversified into aerospace and defense industries. In 1967, the company merged with North American Aviation to form North American Rockwell, which later became Rockwell International in 1973.
The Rockwell name continued through successor companies including Rockwell Automation and Rockwell Collins.
