Physical Description
The FT1D is a compact handheld radio housed in a durable plastic enclosure. It features a monochrome LCD display with adjustable backlighting and contrast. The front panel includes a full keypad for direct frequency entry and menu navigation. A rotary encoder on the top allows for tuning and selection, while a side-mounted push-to-talk (PTT) button provides transmit control. The radio uses a removable SMA antenna and a detachable lithium-ion battery pack. Accessory connections for speaker-microphones and data interfaces are located on the side of the unit.
History
The FT1D was introduced around 2014 as one of the first handheld radios in Yaesu’s System Fusion lineup. This series marked Yaesu’s entry into digital voice communications using the C4FM modulation format. The FT1D combined analog FM capability with digital voice and data features, allowing compatibility with both traditional repeaters and newer digital infrastructure.
The inclusion of built-in GPS and APRS functionality made the radio particularly useful for position reporting and data applications in the amateur radio community. The FT1D helped establish Yaesu’s presence in the digital handheld market alongside other digital standards such as D-STAR and DMR. It was later succeeded by updated models such as the FT2D, which introduced a touchscreen interface and color display.
